Media exergerate criminality in S’West – AIG * As police nab kidnap kingpin

By Steve Oko

The Assistant Inspector General (AIG)  of Police in charge of Zone six , Mr. Leye Oyebade, has decried the activities of some social media operators who he said exergerate some isolated criminal incidents in the zone.

Oyebade made the remarks while parading a notorious kidnap kingpin  Jimoh Adamu Omotayo in Osogbo.

He said that police were making spirited efforts to contain crime in the zone contrary to the erroneous impression in the media that the zone had almost fallen to criminals.

According to a press release by the AIG made available to Wawa News Global, officers and men of the command were determined to deal with criminals terrorising residents of the area.

PRESS RELEASE ON 3RD JULY, 2019

ARREST OF KIDNAP SUSPECT AND UPDATE ON GENERAL SECURITY IN ZONE XI, OSOGBO

While officers and men of Zone XI, Osogbo are making frantic efforts to protect lives and property of the good people of Ondo, Osun and Oyo States, we are disturbed by the unnecessary publicity some of the isolated incidents have generated recently especially on social media. While we admit that there were pockets of security challenges in recent past, we dare say that such incidents have been unduly exaggerated by purveyors of sad news who often circulate on social media platforms, stale news and associate to the zone, videos of gory incidents which occurred elsewhere.
To allay the fears generated by the exaggerated incidents, the zone has beefed up security in all the flashpoints across the three states. With more logistic support from the Inspector-General of Police, and approval of more PMF personnel, we have successfully manned the blackspots in Ikire along Ibadan/Ife Expressway, Iwaraja along Ilesa/Akure expressway and other identified blackspots across the three states. As part of effort to further rout the criminal elements, we have carried out aggressive manhunt for gangs responsible for kidnapping and other heinous crimes in the zone.
Recall that, some of these criminal elements have been arrested in the three states while their arms and ammunition have been recovered. This feat has been largely reported by the media. Our efforts have depleted the ranks of the criminal gangs who make lives unbearable for others.
Recall also that sometimes in April, a notorious kidnap gang responsible for the spate of kidnapping in some parts of the zone was arrested by the Technical Intelligence Response Unit of the Zonal Command. The gang had kidnapped one Salihu Ahmed at Agboye town via Okuku, Osun State on 26/2/2019. The victim was taken to Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State where he was kept captive for seven days. The gang was demanding N3m ransom as condition for his release but could not collect it before they were nabbed. While the gang leader, Jimoh Adamu Omotayo was arrested and paraded on 30th April, 2019, other members of the gang went underground. The gang leader and two other accomplices have since been arraigned in court.
This notwithstanding, the operatives didn’t relent in their manhunt for members of the vicious gang who were at large then. Days of strategic planning eventually yielded result as another principal member of the gang, Ibrahim Babatunde, ‘m’ aged 32 who had been on the run was arrested in his criminal hideout through the collaboration of the Ekiti Police Command.
The suspect, confessed to the crime and made stunning revelation about the escapade of the gang. Intelligence at our disposal revealed that the suspect had been visiting his colleagues in the prison. It is also discovered through credible intelligence that the suspect until his arrest was planning to recruit people of like minds to form another gang, and mobilize resources to get the gang leader out of prison.
The arrest of this particular suspect, and others already paraded notwithstanding, the zone will stop at nothing to arrest all gangs responsible for crimes. We will continue to carry out intelligence- led raid of their criminal hideouts.
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the zone, AIG Adeleye O. Oyebade, mni sincerely appreciates members of the public particularly our strategic partners for their support. He further solicits their understanding and support at all times.
