Abia teachers call off strike
By Steve Oko
The Abia State wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT),Monday, suspended the  two week old industrial action embarked upon by teachers in the state .
Following the suspension of the strike, NUT has directed teachers in the state to resume duty immediately.
A release by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Onyebuchi Ememanka, said the suspension of the strike was as a result of “personal intervention of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu who led the talks with the teachers.”
The release said the Governor was  grateful to the Teachers for their maturity, friendship and commitment to the development of primary and secondary education in the State, noting that the consistent first class performance of Abia State in external examinations in the country is a clear testament to the dedication of our teachers working in synergy with his administration.
Ikpeazu reaffirmed his personal commitment and that of his administration to the strengthening of our educational system through a holistic development strategy with the welfare of teachers at the fulcrum.
He urged the teachers to ensure that in their usual pragmatic manner, lost grounds occasioned by the strike action will be covered to ensure that pupils and students will remain in good standing, especially now that external examinations are imminent.
Meanwhile a Communique issued later by NUT and  signed by its State Chairman, Comrade, Elder Kizito Agwu ; and Comrade Nnenna Okonkwo, State Secretary, on behalf of the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC), the union thanked the Governor for his quick and prompt intervention.
The Communique further stated that “SWEC -In- Session wishes to place on record that it was when our amiable Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu intervened that NUT demands were sincerely and passionately looked into with a view to permanently resolving it amicably”.
