Abia APC backs Kalu, Onyejeocha for DSP, speakership
By Steve Oko
As the intrigues and horse trading for the principal positions at the ninth National Assembly hot up, the Abia State chapter of the All Progressive Congress APC, has declared support Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu as Deputy Senate President.
The Abia APC also threw its full weight behind the ambition of Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha to become the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Chairman of the party, Hon. Donatus Nwankpa who declared the position of the party in an interview Monday in Umuahia said the duo were eminently qualified for both positions.
He argued that since Kalu is the only APC senator from the South East , he should be considered for the position to give the zone a sense of belonging at the leadership of the next senate.
The APC Chairman also contended that Onyejeocha being the longest serving South East House of Representatives member with lots of experiences and pedigree, she should be considered for the position.
According to Nwankpa, the four -term lawmaker has all it takes to lead the House of Representatives.
Nwankpa further argued that since the North and the West had produced the President and Vice President respectively, while the Senate President had been zoned to the North East, natural justice demanded that the South East should be allowed to produce the Deputy Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
He said it would be a gross injustice to exclude the South East from the political power equilibrium of the country.
Similarly, the member representing Umunneochi state constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Ikedi Ezekwesiri said Onyejeocha had the “needed experience and sagacity” to lead the House.
The APC lawmaker who lost at the last poll urged members-elect of the ninth Assembly to elect Onyejeocha as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.
He said APC had no excuse to deny the South East of the opportunity to produce the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
