House of Rep leadership : Ohanaeze youths drum support for Onyejeocha
From Steve Oko, Umuahia
The youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has thrown its might behind the speakership ambition of Hon Nkeiruka Onyejeocha representing Isuikwuato /Umunneochi federal constituency.
Onyejeocha, a four-term lawmaker is one of the only two All Progressive Congress, APC members of the House of Representatives from South East, and has since declared her intention to lead the 9th House.
Ohanaeze Youths in a press release jointly signed by its Deputy National Leader, Dr. Kingsley Dozie , and, said “Onyejeocha has all it takes to be Speaker of the House of Representatives”.
The release said that Onyejeocha had distinguished herself as “an astute and very experienced lawmaker with impeccable track records”.
It read in part : “Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha is a fearless, courageous , highly articulate and seasoned lawmaker who posesses the needed qualities to lead the House of Representatives.
” She has shown dexterity, competence and capacity in the discharge of her responsibilities even as the House Committee Chairman on Aviation”.
Ohanaeze Youths insisted that South East should be allowed to produce the Speaker of the House of Representatives to give the zone a sense of belonging in the country’s political space.
According to Ohanaeze Youths, it is provocative and a collective insult on the Igbo nation for the ruling APC not to consider South East for any principal position in the 9th National Assembly in its zoning formula.
Recall that APC had adopted Senator Ahmed Lawan from North East, and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila (South West) for Senate President, and House of Representatives Speakership positions respectively.
Ohanaeze Youths argued that since the President and Vice President came from North East and South West respectively, the four presiding officers of the National Assembly should be zoned to the remaining four geopolitical zones.
” The elections are over. No zone should be punished for its voting choice at the poll. Nigeria belongs to us all. Ndigbo should not be treated as second class citizens. “
Ohanaeze vowed to resist any plot to scheme out Ndigbo from the Nigerian political equilibrium.
“APC can now know better while the agitation for self determination has refused to abate if South East is too unworthy to be considered for any principal officer of the National Assembly “, the release said.
Ohanaeze Youths urged members of the National Assembly to place competence, equity and Justice above party loyalty in the election of their leadership.
The release further urged them not to allow the parochial interests of some selfish party chieftains and political lords to create further disaffection in the country.
Ohanaeze Youths strongly argued that “what our country needs now is how to unite the disenchanted zones through equitable distribution of political offices and not to further aggravate the already tensed polity “.
