Abia guber :SDP adopts Ikpeazu
From Steve Oko, Umuahia
The Social Democratic Party, SDP in Abia State has adopted Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party as its consensus candidate ahead of the March 9 governorship poll.
Addressing newsmen Tuesday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Press Centre Umuahia, Chairmen of SDP in the 17 Local Government Areas in the state said their action was based on equity and justice.
Chairman ,Forum of LGA Chairmen of SDP in the state, Chief Chijioke Ozems, said Abia charter of equity recommended rotation of power among the senatorial zones in the state.
He argued that since other zones had produced governor for eight years respectively, justice demanded that Ikpeazu who is from Abia South should be allowed a second term to complete the slot of his zone.
They however, emphasised that the adoption was limited to Ikpeazu alone and did extend to PDP candidates for the house of assembly poll.
According to them SDP candidates for the house of assembly are competent enough and still enjoy their full support.
Speaking also the SDP Organising Secretary, Chukwudi Abangowe, said their action did not amount to anti-party but only expression of their esteemed value for justice.
He argued that there was no way they would not support the second term bid of Gov Ikpeazu which he said would help ensure peace and justice in the state.
Abangowe said the rumoured alliance between the All Progressive Congress, APC candidate, Uche Ogah, and his All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA counterpart, Alex Otti would not work because it would rob the Abia South people of their full slot in the power equation of the state.
Asked if their action had the nod of SDP governorship candidate, Hon Blessing Nwagba who is also from Abia South zone just like Ikpeazu, Abangowe said “watch out what will happen in the next 24 to 48 hours”.
Attempts to elicit from the group if its mission had the blessing of the state leadership of the party were unsuccessful as the Spokespersons tactfully prevaricated over the questions.
