I ‘ll quit in 2023’ – Sen Orji, gives reasons
By Steve Oko
Senator Theodore Orji representing Abia Central senatorial district has re-affirmed his ‘irreversible ‘ resolve to quit politics at the expiration of his second tenure in 2023.
Orji who made the declaration while addressing journalists Tuesday in Umuahia said his decision not to seek a fresh mandate after 2023 was to make way for younger politicians to come on board.
His words :” This is my last political outing in terms of elective positions. I have to make way for people to grow.
“If I don’t retire I will be denying young people the chance to grow. I will quit in 2023 so the young can grow. “
Orji who first made this promise while seeking a second term said he would not renege on his words.
He further noted that he is a strong advocate of equity and justice, hence the overwhelming support he elicited at the poll.
The former Governor predicted victory for his party, the Peoples Democracy Party, PDP in the forthcoming governorship and state house of assembly elections in Abia.
Assessing the conduct of the presidential and national assembly elections, Orji alleged that the late commencement of polls in Abia was a strategy to downgrade the voting strength of the state.
He said there was a massive turnout of voters but regretted that some were disenfranchised as they were impatient to wait until the end of voting which began in most polling booths by 2:00pm.
The former Governor blamed the ruling All Progressive Congress and the electoral umpire for the ugly development which he alleged, was to diminish the electoral fortunes of PDP.
Orji said he had to launch a protest at the state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission before the polls could commence, a sad development he claimed, was deliberate to reduce the votes from the state.
