- 2019 polls: Kalu threatening to destabilise Abia, group alleges
By Steve Oko
As activities for the 2019 polls gather momentum, a group known as Abia Group for Peace & Unity, has accused former Governor of the state and a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, APC, of plots to distablise the state.
Wawa News Global reports that Kalu who governed Abia from 1999 to 2007, is the APC senatiorial candidate for Abia North.
Addressing newsmen yesterday in Umuahia, the Cordinator of the group, Dr. Anthony Agbazuere, said Kalu had been making some unguarded utterances capable of plunging the state into crisis.
Agbazuere who was flanked by other members of the group including former National Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, and Commissioner for Information, Mr. Bonnie Iwuoha; former Media Adviser, Mr. Ugochukwu Emezue, during the briefing said the group was worried about the inflammatory remarks by Kalu in recent times.
He said Kalu was quoted in a recent media report of threatening the life of the Deputy Governor, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, should he try to manipulate the result of the polls in his Nkporo community.
The group also said Kalu ” equally threatened to ambush the Deputy Governor at Igbere (Kalu’s home town) whenever he passes through there “.
Reading from a prepared speech, Agbazuere further said : “In Sun publication of February 1st Orji Uzor Kalu said among other things that if the Deputy Governor Oko Chukwu tries to take their mandate by force he will go by force.
” Referring to the Deputy Governor again Kalu said ‘if he tries that nonsense we will bundle him out of Nkporo “.
Agbazuere therefore said “as a group for Peace and Unity we are alarmed at these careless and unguarded outbursts by Kalu who is even being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC for looting Abia treasury to the tune of N7 billion “.
The group also alleged that “Kalu in the company of some thugs in military uniform , on January 31st invaded Nkporo and destroyed several campaign billboards belonging to other political parties”.
Agbazuere accused Kalu of over -heating the Abia polity, cautioning that individuals should not put the lives of the people at risk because of their political ambition.
He expressed “deep concern that such negative comments and threats by Kalu and his agents are likely to destroy the unquantifiable peace which Abia State has enjoyed in the last four years “.
The group therefore, called on the presidency as well as the police to call Kalu to order before he instigates political crisis in the state.
“We caution Kalu to be mindful of his actions and we also call on the Presidency, Inspector General of Police and other security agencies, to call Orji Uzor Kalu to order immediately to avoid any breakdown of law and order “.
Agbazuere said the alarm by his group was without any political attachments but in the overriding interest of the state “so that no politician disrupts the prevailing peace and order because of personal interest “.
