2019 polls : Abia clerics go spiritual
* Invoke curses on looters, election rigers
By Steve Oko
As the 2019 general elections gather momentum, some clergy men in Abia State, Wednesday, decided to go spiritual in their bid to ensure a hitch -free poll in the state.
The clerics under the aegis of Concerned Ministers for Abia , marched through major streets in Umuahia with stop-overs at strategic junctions for prayers.
They prayed for peaceful and violent -free polls both in the state and the entire country.
The clerics who came from different denominations also during the prayers, placed curses on those who are plotting to rig the forthcoming elections as well as looters of public funds.
Addressing newsmen later at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Press Centre, spokesman of the group, Pastor Ralph Nwokonta, said they were concerned about the peace and security of the masses, hence the action.
He said as concerned Ministers of God they could no longer afford to stay aloof and watch things go wrong.
Pastor Nwokonta said there were ominous signals that the forthcoming polls would be violent considering the actions and utterances of politicians, hence the need for divine intervention.
“We have gone round the city to prophesy and speak to the loins of Abia State. We don’t want any bloodshed during the elections.
” No cultist, no blood sucker or looter should win election or get into power . We want God’s intervention both in Abia and Nigeria.”
The cleric said they were not sponsored by any politician(s) nor were they supporting any particular candidate or political party.
” Our prayer is for God to give us the best among the candidates”, he said.
He, therefore, advised eligible voters who were yet to collect their Permernent Voter Card, PVC, to pick them before the deadline.
The cleric also counseled the people against boycotting the polls saying such unpatriotic action is counter -productive as it will only give the wrong candidates opportunity to grab power.
He also advised against selling of votes as it amounts to mortgaging ones future .
The clerics carried banners with various instructions and were making some proclamations as they marched on the streets .
End.
