Abia North shooting : Ohuabunwa calls for arrest of Kalu
By Steve Oko
Senator Mao Ohuabunwa representing Abia North senatorial district has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of former Governor of the state and the senatorial candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu over the alleged shooting of protesters by his security aide.
Kalu had gone to Ihechiowa on Wednesday for campaign when his security aide reportedly opened fire on protesters who stormed the venue “to remind him of his neglect of the area during his tenure as governor of the state” .
One of the protesters was reportedly hit by bullet and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Umuahia.
Senator Ohuabunwa who spoke through his Follow Better Campaign Organisation, strongly condemned the action and called for a full scale investigation.
Acting State Coordinator of the Organization, Julius Ogbuagu, in a press statement issued yesterday, called on Kalu to turn himself over to security agents for investigations.
He expressed shock that Kalu has not visited the victim in hospital since then.
The statement read in part :”We condenm in strong terms the reported Wednesday attack on innocent protesters, at Ihechiowa, by the embattled former governor of the state Chief Orji Uzor Kalu and his trigger happy security aides who fired several gun shots to the crowd.
“We are however more pained by his desperate failed attempt to twist the story in his favour . The ex governor in his usual character turned around to blamed the protesters to have attacked him first during his aborted campaign in the area .”
Ohuabunwa advised Kalu to first acquit himself of the N7.7 billion corruption allegation against him while he was Governor before contesting for the senatorial seat .
“The organization like many other good people of the state had thought that chief Kalu should be more concerned with his ongoing trial over alleged N7. 7 billion fraud charges levelled against him by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).
“Rather than embark on his failed political voyage , chief Orji should honourably throw in the towel and tender unreserved apologies to the people of the state for allegedly looting the state dry during his controversial eight years in office .
The former Governor is still standing trial over N7.7 billion fraud levelled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
“Ordinarily it would amount to a waste of time to join issue with this drowning politician and his known antics , but we are however constrianed by the erroneous impression his statement intended to create in the mind of other innocent people “, Ohuabunwa said.
The senator however urged his supporters to remain calm and not respond to any provocations.
“We therefore urge our teaming supporters to remain law abiding and turn out in their crowd to finally retire the ex governor .
“The people of Abia north are not however deterred by chief Kalu and his continued harassment and intimidation of innocent citizens .
“The ex governor is rejected and remains unacceptable by the people and he knows this.”
