The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has announced its preferred candidate for the 2019 presidential poll.
NUJ National President, Comrade Chris Isigugozo who disclosed this in a media chat in his Umuahia, Abia State country home, said “Nigeria is the candidate of NUJ” for the 2019 elections.
Isigugozo said journalists as the conscience of the nation and the watch dog for society would continue to hold government accountable to the people.
He said that as a matter of ethics, journalists were shielded from partisan politics and would not compromise their nonpartisan stance “even in 2019”.
Isigugozo said the preoccupation of the Nigeria journalists ahead of the 2019 polls were how to ensure the necessary stakeholders including the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and security agencies discharge their duties in a manner that would give room for credible poll.
He said “NUJ is not supporting and will not support any particular candidate” but would rather work towards actualising a credible and internallionlly acceptable election.
His words :”NUJ has not endorsed and will not endorse any candidate. Our candidate is Nigeria! “
Isigugozo urged journalists not to compromise on the ethics of the profession in the coverage of the 2019 polls.
He also advised journalists against sensational reports, unverified reports or outright falsehood capable of setting the country on fire.
The NUJ boss urged journalists to place the peace and unity of the country above other considerations as they cover the 2019 polls.
” We believe in Nigeria and its unity, and must continue to work in the overall interest of the country irrespective of our personal views, ethnic or religious differences. “
He called on INEC not to betray the confidence reposed in it for a credible poll warning that any attempt to manipulate the outcome of the elections will be resisted.
The NUJ boss equally warned politicians against vote buying, inducement of INEC officials and ad-hoc staff as well as recruitment of youths for thuggery .
