A forum of opinion moulders in Mgbidi, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, has strongly condemned the assassination attempt on the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and members of his family.
The forum under the aegis of Mgbidi Leaders of Thought expressed shock over the incident which they said was a danger signal for the country.
Spokesman of the group, Chief Raymond Onyirimba, in a press statement made available to Wawa News Global, said the sad development was a bad signal and serious dent on the image of Nigeria.
Faulting the interim report of the police which said the incident was a case of burglary, MLOT called for probe and thorough investigation of the incident.
According to MLOT, it is worrisome that the residence of a sitting Deputy Senate President could be so easily penetrated by a mere burglar.
MLOT wondered how ordinary burglars could have the effontry to seize Ekweremadu’s son and demand that he take them to the father’s bedroom.
The group said the scenario raised some curious questions about the security arrangement around the Deputy Senate President and his family.
MLOT noted with concern that the incident was not the first time there was an attempt on Ekweremadu’s life “who is the only Igbo man close to power today in Nigeria by shere providence “.
The statement read in part : “Why will they want to kill the only Igbo man in position of high authority in Nigeria? Is it a crime to be Igbo ?”
MLO urged the police to beef up security around Ekweremadu and his family to avoid any harm befalling them.
The group also called for the immediate and proper prosecution of the apprehended suspect so he would not escape justice , while urging that efforts should be intensified towards arresting other members of the gang that reportedly fled the scene.
