. As S’East NASS caucus pledges support

As the alleged discordant tunes by South East Governors concerning the nomination of Peter Obi as the running mate to the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar is still generating reactions, Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, has said that the Governors did not at any time reject Obi’s nomination.
Ikpeazu who made the clarification in Abia while fielding questions from newsmen during a visit by Obi, explained that what the Governors and other PDP leaders in the zone frowned at was the the way and manner Atiku handled the nomination.
He said that the PDP leaders had expected that Atiku should, as a mark of honour and respect consult with them before announcing his choice of running mate.
Ikpeazu said that contrary to misconception in some quarters, South East Governors and leaders , firmly stand behind Obi who he described as one of the zone’s bests.
“At no time did we say we are not happy with Obi’s nomination”, Ikpeazu said, adding that ” it will be fool hardy for anybody not to support him “.
He congratulated Obi on his nomination and described him as “a worthy son of Igbo land, worthy Nigerian, a gift to Ndigbo and one of the best Igboland can offer.”
He said enemies of Ndigbo are making futile attempts to see if they could take undue advantage of the scenario to fan the embers of disunity among brothers.
Ikpeazu said that apart from PDP leaders in South East, Ndigbo as a tribe including non PDP members are solidly behind the choice of Obi for the Vice Presidential slot, and are committed to actualising the Atiku /Obi joint ticket.
“Obi’s choice as apt. Every Igbo is already working towards actualising the project, and you can be sure the entire county is also happy with the choice. “
This is as the South East cacaus in the National Assembly has declared support for the Atiku /Obi ticket.
Chairman of the caucus , Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who was also in Abia to receive Obi said all the Igbo National Assembly members were delighted with the choice of Obi as Atiku’s running mate, and would help to actualise the project.
Abaribe said that at no time was there a problem with his nomination as Vice Presidential candidate.
According to him Nigeria needs characters in the mold of Obi “whose yes will be yes and who Nigerians can queue behind and recover from dispondency.”
Abaribe said Atiku /Obi ticket was already causing sleepless nights for the ruling party, hence the unnecessary media hype over a family matter.
Meanwhile, Obi has said that the South East has never been divided but acted as a team contrary to erroneous projections by the fifth columnist.
The former Anambra State Governor said he had spoken with both the three PDP Governors in the zone, and National Assembly members, and is never in doubt of their unalloyed support for him and his principal.
Obi said nobody can cause division among brothers based on unfounded rumours, adding that the major focus of their team is how to rebuild the country including South East if given the mandate.
