Senator Theodore Orji representing Abia Central has arguably, distinguished himself as an epitome of youths and women empowerment. His passion for youths empowerment dates back to his days as Abia Governor which witnessed the greatest empowerment era since the history of Abia State.

As a senator , Orji has touched so many lives through his numerous empowerment programmes. Youths and women have remained the greatest beneficiaries of these gestures which have in no small measure possessively impacted on their lives, their families and by extension the society.

Within his three years sojourn at the Red chamber, Ochendo Global as he is fondly called has put smiles on many faces. As soon as he came on board he quickly rolled out a scholarship scheme aimed at assisting 10 undergraduates from each of the six Local Government Areas in the senatorial district in their academic pursuit.

Sixty undergraduates benefit from the scheme per annum. While five of the beneficiaries are selected from among the brilliant undergraduates, the other five slots go to the undergraduates from indigent homes. As at today no fewer than 180 undergraduates from Abia Central in various tertiary institutions in Nigeria have benefited from the scheme.

Speaking in one of the cheque disbursement outings , Orji said his decision to invest in the education of youths from his zone was necessitated by his conviction that education remained the bedrock of any society. He averred that any people without educated youths have no future, hence his resolve to ensure that no serious-minded youth in Abia Central senatorial district interested in academics will have any excuse not to acquire tertiary education.

He said education empowerment remained the best form of empowerment because of its ripple effects. The Senator who said it was also a way he could give back to society in appreciation of God’s kindness to him, urged youths in the zone to take advantage of the annual event and secure their future. He also promised to sustain the scheme for as long as he is in the senate. Each beneficiary receives a cheque of N100,000.

But besides education, the former Governor has also sponsored a number of youths from the zone in vocational skills. He has also gone further to empower the beneficiaries with the basic equipment needed in their various vocations so they can start up their own business. Agriculture has been the major target of this scheme as many of the beneficiaries received training in mechanised farming, poultry, piggery , fishery and other modern ways of agriculture. Some of the beneficiaries also receive free fertilizer in addition to take-off funds.

 

The former Governor whose philanthropic gestures are incontrovertibly unprecedented among both the living and dead Abia politicians has won the admiration of many with his ‘ stomach infrastructure’ philosophy. He has personally and directly affected a lot of lives through his welfarism. At a time when some of his colleagues were being mocked for giving out frying pans and cutlasses as empowerment tools, Senator Orji gave out scholarships, sewing machines, tricycles and meaningful cash to youths women and other deserving individuals in his zone and beyond.

Little wonder his second term ambition does not seem to have any known threat as the army of his numerous empowerment schemes and acts of benevolence are battle ready to renew his mandate come 2019. Although politics is very much unpredictable, Senator Orji is unlikely to suffer any major setback / serious challenge in his re-election bid. Even his opponents acknowledge that when it comes to empowerment, benevolence and stomach infrastructure, Ochendo towers so high!

While he held sway as Governor, intentionally or not , Orji, his wife, and son – Hon. Chinedum Orji ( Ikuku) , affected so many lives, majority of who are still their staunch supporters and die-hard followers till date. He may not be flippant unlike some of his colleagues but Ochendo is undeniably a grassrooter and crowd puller. He knowns how to raise and sustain followers unlike many politicians. He still enjoys the support of most of his appointees and fans. The Ochendo political dynasty remains the strongest and most popular and organised in Abia of today with network and vibrant structures in every LGA.

Despite all odds and skirmishes by his detractors and traducers, Senator Orji will undoubtedly have a smooth sail at the 2019 poll. His legislative exploits also provide additional boost to his chances. With over 11 bills at various stages of legislation and three motions to his credit, Senator Orji, though a first timer has proved that he is no kid in the parliamentary business.
