By Steve Oko
Abia former Governor and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Orji Kalu has appealed to Nigerians to embrace peace.
Kalu who made the appeal in his Sallah message urged leaders across the country to use their positions to advocate peaceful co-existence among Nigerians irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political leanings .
The former Governor in a press statement issued today expressed concern over the attitude of some political leaders who are making utterances capable of polarising the country.
Kalu in the statement signed by his Special Adviser, Kunle Oyewumi, felicitated with the Muslim community across the globe, wishing them a peaceful Eld-El Kabir.
He urged Nigerians to use the festive period to pray for the peace and unity of country and its leadership.
Kalu said “Nigerians should embrace patriotism, selflessness and discipline in their pursuits for the sake of rebuilding the nation.”
On the agitations in some quarters for the fragmentation of the country, Kalu argued that Nigeria is better off as an indivisible and united entity.
He cautioned against any attempt to dismember the country, saying such option won’t be in anyone’s favour.
The statement read in part : “I congratulate our Muslim brothers and sisters on the occasion of Eid-el Kabir.
“It is a special season and it calls for special prayers for the country.
“We should use this opportunity to appraise ourselves as individuals and as a people.
“We should exhibit piety, selflessness, patriotism and service to humanity in our activities as enshrined in the Holy Quran.
“Let us respect other people’s religious beliefs and by so doing, there will be no rift in the society.
“Nigeria remains a blessed nation owing to its diversity in religion and ethnicity”.
The former Governor also cautioned against hate speech which he described as a flame capable of consuming the country.
He called on true lovers of the country to join hands with the President Muhammadu Buhari -led administration to reposition Nigeria.
