Ohanaeze youths dare FG on Ekweremadu , vow to resist further attempt to intimidate, harass Igbo leaders
By Steve Oko,  Umuahia
The youth wing of the apex Igbo sociocultural association,  Ohanaeze Ndigbo,  has sternly warned the Federal Government and its agencies against further persecution of the  Deputy Senate President ,  Senator Ike Ekweremadu.
Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC),  vowed that henceforth any further attempt by the All Progressive Congress , APC -led Federal Government or its agencies to intimidate , harass or victimise the Deputy Senate President,  or any Igbo leader would be stoutly resisted.
According to  OYC the current ordeals of Ekweremadu “who is the highest ranking Igbo political leader today” are politically motivated, deliberate and only intended to cow him in particular and the Igbo in general.
A press statement issued Wednesday by OYC said Igbo youths would no longer watch Igbo sons and daughters being harassed  by agents of government on trumped up charges.
The statement jointly signed by OYC Acting National Leader, Dr. Kingsley Dozie; and National Secretary, Uchenna Madubihe, warned state actors not to derail Nigeria ‘s fragile  democracy.
According to  the statement a copy of which was made available to WaWa News Global, any further persecution of Ekweremadu who is the current highest Igbo political office holder would be considered a direct affront on the Igbo nation.
OYC argued that it is such provocative treatments like the one being meted to Ekweremadu that fuel the growing agitation for Biafra republic , an idealogy that has refused to die among Igbos.
It warned against pressing Ndigbo to the wall again, insisting that Igbo which race which is one of Nigeria’s tripod cannot be relegated to the background.
OYC further  restated its support for a restructured Nigeria before the 2019 elections.
According to OYC , the real enemies of Nigeria are those opposed to restructuring , adding that only restructuring can gurantee Nigeria’s continued existence as on political entity.
Below is a full text of the press statement :
“The Igbo Youths would resist any attempt to discredit, intimidate or harrass the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu or other Notable Sons and Daughters of Ndigbo
“We have Keenly watched the game been played by Federal Government, all geared towards 2019 general election.
It was preposterous for the Federal Government to be carrying out unwarranted inquisition into Ekweremadu’s life,  the highest ranking Igbo politician in the country, embezzled public funds without any prima facie case was inappropriate.
“The idea of asking the Senator to defend himself instead of his accusers showing how he fraudulently enriched himself, amounted to turning the law upside down.
“Sen. Ike Ekweremadu is a revered Igbo son and had attracted a lot of development to his area without any previous accusation of embezzlement or found wanting. So any attempt by the Government of the day to intimidate him because of 2019 election will never see the light of the day.
“We queried the system of investigation where one was tried for simply belonging to a political party and other is exonerated of an offence he committed for belonging to another political party or being in government.
“We would no longer fold our arms while Igbo sons are being systematically singled out for harassment and intimidatiion all because they don’t belongs to the same camp or political party. We noticed that some cautionary measure are been taking against Igbo leaders and wondered why others case would be different.
“It was such selective justice and marginalization of Ndigbo that fuelled agitations by our Youths for self-determination, Hence restructuring is a first step toward assuaging the situation.
“We would continue to go for peace by in agitating for a restructured Nigeria.”
