2019: Abia is safe in my hands – Ikpeazu
From Steve Oko, Umuahia
As political intrigues ahead of the 2019 polls gather momentum, Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu, has declared that the state is safe in his hands.
Ikpeazu who made the declaration in Umuahia during a grand rally by the Old Bende political bloc endorsing his second term bid, said the state would witness more developments if given another opportunity to serve.
He said that if he could achieve much during his first tenure despite protracted legal tussles and distractions from his opponents, the state should expect tremendous multi sectoral transformation in his second tenure.
Ikpeazu commended the people of Old Bende political bloc comprising all five local government areas of Abia North and three LGAs in Abia Central, for their steadfast support to his administration.
He also thanked them for strongly supporting power shift to Abia South in 2015 based on Abia Charter of Equity which he said he was the major beneficiary.
Ikpeazu attributed the prevailing peace in Abia political landscape to the respect of the peace for equity and fair distribution of political offices based on justice and fair play.
” Equity engenders peace and brings development”, Ikpeazu declared, arguing that he would not have achieved much under political crisis.
Speaking earlier, the immediate – past Governor of the state, Senator Theodore Orji, said Ikpeazu’s landmark achievements so far in office had vindicated his decision to support his emergence in 2015.
He said he had strongly supported power shift to Abia South in 2015 because of his firm belief on equity and justice .
Senator Orji said Ikpeazu had displayed competence and commitment in running the state , and urged him to go for a second term to consolidate on his achievements.
He threatened to obtain a court injunction to compel Ikpeazu to run for a second term should he hesitate in heeding the clamour to recontest.
” If he says no we will get a court injunction to compel him”, Orji said while the mammoth crowd gave a thunderous approval.
Senator Orji strongly advocated that rotation be maintained in sharing political offices in the state.
Earlier in his address, Chairman of the planning committee, and Deputy Governor, Hon. Ude Okochukwu, said the event was to consolidate the old time relationship existing between Old Bende and Aba division.
He said Ikpeazu’s landmark achievements was the reason for the clamour by the people for him to recentest in 2019.
The event was massively attended by ‘ who is who’ in the eight LGAs in the Old Bende division.
