Anxiety in Benue as 8 out of 30 lawmakers impeach Gov Ortom
Anxiety and tension have engulfed Benue State following the purported impeachment of Gov. Samuel Ortom by eight out of the 30 members of the state’s House of Assembly.
The lawmakers who met at the Assembly complex Monday morning amidst tight security by the police allegedly served impeachment notice on the governor.
Reports say heavily armed police men barricaded every entry to the Assembly complex while the eight All Progressive Congress members met, thereby preventing any other person from gaining access into the complex.
This is happening in less than four days Ortom defected from APC to the Peoples Democratic Party.
A number of lawmakers also defected along with the Governor bringing PDP to majority with about 22 members in the House of Assembly.
Ortom’s spokesman, Tahav Agerzua, confirmed the development.
He said the lawmakers took over the Assembly complex to sit and pass the impeachment notice while the police blocked further access.
It is however not yet clear if the Chief Judge of the State would give legal backing to the notice.
